Nelson Mandela is a Xosha South African who spent 27 years in jail for his opposition to South Africa’s ruling government’s apartheid policies. Released in 1990, he helped lead South Africa out of apartheid and became the first President of South Africa from 1994-1999. Widely regarded as an icon of democracy and social justice, he received more than 250 international honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize.
