Melnea Cass organized black women in Boston to cast their first vote in 1920 after the passage of the 19th Amendment. In 1950 she was also the only female charter member of Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD). From 1962 to 1964, she was president of the Boston branch of the NAACP She was also president of the Women’s Service Club. She was known as “The First Lady of Roxbury”
